Descripción

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with expertise in formal approaches to syntax and/or semantics, with a focus on Spanish.

We seek a scholar who uses diverse methodological and empirical approaches to examine the structure and meaning of Spanish, and who could collaborate with colleagues in the department and in allied units such as Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, and Speech and Hearing Science. In particular, we are interested in applicants who work on understudied language varieties, including but not limited to the Spanish of historically racialized groups; Spanish in contact with indigenous or minority languages and lesser-known varieties of Spanish and Portuguese. We see this position as an opportunity to build upon our existing strengths as a leading program in Hispanic Linguistics.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese has 20 tenure-track faculty, as well as 26 associated faculty and 3 professors of teaching. The Department has four main academic programs: Hispanic Linguistics, Latin American Literatures and Cultures, Iberian Studies and Studies of the Portuguese-speaking World, as well as an interdisciplinary specialization in Latinx Literatures, Cultures & Languages.

In addition to maintaining an active research program, candidates are expected to contribute to the Department’s teaching and service missions by teaching, advising, and mentoring students. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to teach upper-level undergraduate and introductory graduate courses in Hispanic Linguistics on syntax and/or semantics, as well as specialized graduate-level seminars, and, when appropriate, contribute to curricular development.

The Ohio State University has a strong institutional commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all areas. We favor candidates who can promote interdisciplinary perspectives, intercultural understanding, sensitivity and respect among our departmental community and the wider communities we serve.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics, Linguistics or a related field by the time of appointment (August 15, 2023). Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English are required. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals or the promise of an emerging publication record. We seek candidates who demonstrate multicultural competence, or the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant, and productive ways. Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of cultures and academic backgrounds is preferred. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
