The School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University urgently needs a temporary replacement for undergraduate online teaching in Spanish and Romance linguistics (hourly paid) to start teaching on 1 February until the end of March.  


All the teaching material is prepared and accessible. In principle this hourly paid appointment is for 8 weeks but could be extended.

Stage 1 Introduction to Linguistics: 7 1-hour seminar sessions with one or two groups per week


Module structure: Lectures for this module have been recorded and are already accessible online, so the only timetabled sessions are seminars. The appointee will be responsible for administering the seminars. Linguistic subdisciplines are treated one at a time. Semester 2 will treat morphology, syntax, historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, in that order. Students are expected to watch the lecture on a given linguistic subdiscipline before the block of seminars on that subdiscipline.


Module description: This module aims to provide students with a broad-based introduction to linguistics using data mainly from French, German, and Spanish. It provides a basic introduction to the scientific study of human language. In Semester 1, students have been introduced to the description of French, German, or Spanish, especially to phonetic transcription and aspects of the phonology of these languages. In Semester 2, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics and historical linguistics will be introduced.


 


Stage 2 World Spanish: Lectures and seminars


SPA2019 introduces students to the different varieties of Spanish that are spoken in the world.
The lectures look at Spanish on a region-by-region basis, but students will be expected to adopt a thematic perspective, using the data to address such issues as the standard language versus regional varieties, social variation, languages in contact (Andes, Meso America, Paraguay, USA), creole Spanish (Pacific and Caribbean), archaism in the Americas, linguistic drift and dialect classification.


 


Stage 3 Spanish and Romance word analysis: Lectures and seminars


The module explores how Spanish grew out of proto-Romance (late spoken Latin), by considering (i) the sound changes that have affected the vocabulary and (ii) the associated restructuring of the language’s morphology. A comparative perspective will be adopted, enabling students to see how other Romance languages, such as French, Catalan or Italian, have taken different historical trajectories, having started from the same baseline.
