The Department of Romance Philology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is looking to fill the position of a Research Assistant (all genders welcome) within the project “A 15th-century medico-botanical synonym list in Hebrew characters from central Italy” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

This position is planned to be filled by June 1, 2020. The regular working hours will be currently 19.9 hours per week with a limited contract of three years. Salary: Pay grade 13 TV-L (half-time position).

The duties of the Position comprise the collaboration in the above mentioned project (in a team of four research assistants and three principle investigators), particularly the edition and analysis of the Old Occitan and Medieval Latin terminology of medicine documented in the synonym list at issue and other corresponding manuscripts written in Hebrew letters, as well as the preparation of drafts in English referring to these terms and the storage of the lexical information in a XML-based data base. The applicant’s willingness to participate in conferences and to organize workshops are also required. Dissertation projects within the narrower or wider context of the project are welcome.

The successful candidate will hold a highly qualified Master degree (Master of Arts) in Romance and/or (Medieval) Latin Philology and will have focused on (historical) lexicology, specialized terminology (of medicine) and/or language contact. In addition, relevant knowledge of Latin, English and of at least one modern Romance language (minimum level B2 CEFR, preferably French, Occitan or Catalan) are required. The familiarity with the medieval stages of the Romance languages and knowledge of historical grammar are desirable. The applicant's willingness to acquire independently a basic proficiency of Hebrew, paleography and scholarly editing practice are greatly appreciated and supported as far as possible.
