The Hispanic Linguistics track in Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications to the Ph.D. program for students starting their studies in the Fall Semester 2025.

Our PhD program in Hispanic Linguistics allows students to focus on applied linguistics, indigenous languages of Latin America, language acquisition, phonetics and phonology, formal semantics and pragmatics, sociolinguistics and dialectology, and syntax. Please visit https://www.umass.edu/spanish-portuguese/academics/graduate-programs for more details regarding the Ph.D program. If an applicant knows faculty members with whom they might work, the faculty member would be happy to answer any questions that prospective students may have. Please contact them individually regarding their research or classes.

Doctoral students receive four years of funding support if they hold an M.A. at the time when they enter the program, and five years if they enter the program without an M.A. Extensions depend upon availability. Doctoral students receive a full tuition waiver and a stipend while they work as Teaching Associates, teaching one course per semester in Spanish. More information regarding funding can also be found at https://www.umass.edu/spanish-portuguese/academics/graduate-programs/funding.
