One of the most incredible aspects of human history is the fact that despite the many cultures that have sprung up through the millennia, Languages have continued to evolve through an impressive combination of trade and cultural integration. And because of this, most languages have certain similarities, whether it is through a certain use of a word or pronunciation. In “A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Spanish Language with Families of Words based on Indo-European Roots” author Edward E. Roberts has written a truly ingenious book that shows readers how most languages come from very similar sources.

“A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Spanish Language with Families of Words based on Indo-European Roots” shows readers how the languages of the Indo-European group are spoken by roughly three billion people, the largest number for recognized language families. Of the top 20 modern languages, 12 are Indo-European: Spanish, English, Hindi, Portuguese, Bengali, Russian, German, Marathi, French, Italian, Punjabi and Urdu. This highly informative read traces the etymologies of the entries to their earliest sources, shows their kinship to both Spanish and English, and organizes them into families of words in an Appendix of Indo-European roots. Entries are based on those of the “Diccionario de la lengua española de la Real Academia Española.”

This highly detailed book will equip language learners with both the denotation and etymology of Spanish words in relation to its Indo-European roots. “A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Spanish Language with Families of Words based on Indo-European Roots” is a great read for linguist everywhere.
